Update Variables with Logic
Variables are named values that live alongside your form’s questions — and logic rules can create and change them as a respondent answers. Two default numeric variables (price, score) and one text variable (segment) exist in every form, and you can add your own custom variables.
Variable actions are what turn a form into a calculator: a quiz that adds points for correct answers, a quote form that builds a total price, or a funnel that tags respondents as hot or cold leads.
The two variable actions
Section titled “The two variable actions”| Action | Works on | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Set value | Text variables | Assigns a fixed, static value |
| Calculate | Numeric variables | Adds, subtracts, multiplies, or divides a value against the variable’s current value |
Set a text variable
Section titled “Set a text variable”Assigns a static value to a text variable — for example, set segment to “hot lead” when a respondent’s budget answer crosses a threshold.
Calculate on a numeric variable
Section titled “Calculate on a numeric variable”Adds, subtracts, multiplies, or divides a value against the variable’s current value. Because the operation builds on whatever the variable holds right now, a single question can accumulate across respondents’ choices — this is how totals and scores are built.
The default variables
Section titled “The default variables”| Variable | Kind | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
price | Numeric | Order and quote totals — add each selection’s price as the respondent chooses |
score | Numeric | Quiz points and lead scoring — add or subtract points based on answers |
segment | Text | Labels — set “hot”, “warm”, or “cold” based on qualification answers |
Worked examples
Section titled “Worked examples”Add points for a correct answer
Section titled “Add points for a correct answer”On a quiz question:
Rule 1: answer is “Paris” → add 10 to
score
Build a running total
Section titled “Build a running total”On an order form’s size question:
IF size is “Large” → add 15 to
price
Across several questions — size, extras, delivery — price accumulates into a complete total by the end of the form.
Tag a lead’s segment
Section titled “Tag a lead’s segment”On the final qualification question:
IF budget is greater than or equal to 5000 → set
segmentto “priority”
Show the result on your Thank You Page
Section titled “Show the result on your Thank You Page”Variables can be recalled in your Thank You Page content — so a respondent who just finished a quote form sees the total they built:
“Your estimated total is {{price}}. Thanks, {{name}}!”
See Recall Information and the Thank You Page guide.
Variables in conditions
Section titled “Variables in conditions”Updating variables is only half the story — variables can also drive conditions, letting later rules branch once a threshold is crossed (for example, jump to a different ending when score reaches 50). Numeric variables use numeric comparisons, text variables use text comparisons — the full list is in Condition Types & Operators.
Can I set a variable to the respondent’s answer? No. Set-value actions assign static text only, and calculations work on numbers you specify. To reuse an answer elsewhere, use Recall Information — answers, variables, and hidden fields can all be recalled in question text and the Thank You Page.
What happens if multiple rules update the same variable? All matching variable rules apply, in order — they compose. If one rule adds 10 and a later rule multiplies by 2, the result follows that sequence.
Do variable updates survive if the respondent never submits? Variable values are part of the respondent’s session. Responses that complete will reflect the final values; for respondents who abandon, see partial submissions.
Can I reset a variable to zero? Yes — subtract the same amount you added, or structure your rules so each variable is only updated on the paths where it should accumulate.
