Condition Types & Operators
Every logic rule is built from conditions — statements that are either true or false for the current respondent. This page is the reference for the four sources a condition can reference and the comparison operators available for each question type.
The four condition sources
Section titled “The four condition sources”| Source | Reads | Example condition |
|---|---|---|
| Current question | The answer being given right now | This multiple choice is “Option A” |
| Previous questions | Any earlier answer in the form | The opinion scale on question 2 is greater than 7 |
| Variables | Numeric or text variables, including defaults | score is greater than or equal to 50 |
| Hidden fields | Values passed in through the form URL | utm_source equals “instagram” |
Current question’s answer
Section titled “Current question’s answer”The most common source: branch based on the answer being given at this very question. Each question type contributes its own operators — a multiple choice question matches against its options, a numeric question compares values.
Previous questions’ answers
Section titled “Previous questions’ answers”Conditions can reference answers given earlier in the form. This lets a later question react to anything the respondent has already told you — for example, showing a different follow-up depending on how an earlier rating went.
Variables
Section titled “Variables”Both the default variables (price, score, segment) and your own custom variables can drive conditions. This is the backbone of calculators and scoring: accumulate values with variable-update actions, then branch once a threshold is crossed. See Update Variables with Logic.
Hidden fields
Section titled “Hidden fields”Hidden fields carry values from the form URL — UTM tags, campaign IDs, known customer data. Conditions on hidden fields let one form serve multiple campaigns with different paths. See Hidden Fields.
Operators by question type
Section titled “Operators by question type”Each question type has operators that match the kind of data it collects.
| Question type | Operators |
|---|---|
| Short text · Long text · Email · Website | equals · does not equal · begins with · ends with · contains · does not contain |
| Rating · Opinion scale · Number · NPS | equals · does not equal · lower than · lower than or equal to · greater than · greater than or equal to |
| Multiple choice · Picture choice · Yes/No · Legal · Checkbox | is · is not |
| Date | is on · is not on · earlier than · earlier than or on · later than · later than or on |
| File upload | answered |
| Hidden fields | equals · does not equal · begins with · ends with · contains · does not contain |
| Text variables | equals · does not equal · begins with · ends with · contains · does not contain |
| Numeric variables | equals · does not equal · lower than · lower than or equal to · greater than · greater than or equal to |
Notes:
- File upload supports a single check — answered — by design: whether a file was provided is the only thing logic needs to know about an upload.
- Variables use the numeric operators when they hold numbers and the text operators when they hold text.
Question types without logic support
Section titled “Question types without logic support”Dropdown, phone number, address, and contact info questions cannot be used in logic conditions.
If you need branching on a selection, use a multiple choice question instead — it renders similarly and fully supports the is / is not operators.
Combining conditions: and / or
Section titled “Combining conditions: and / or”A rule can contain multiple conditions, joined with and or or — and you can mix the two in a single rule.
Conditions are evaluated left to right with no operator precedence: each condition is joined to the result of the conditions before it. A rule reading:
A and B or C
is evaluated as:
(A and B) or C
Tip: for complex logic, split it into multiple rules instead of one long condition chain. Each rule is an independent group, and rules run in order — see rule order in the Conditional Logic guide.
Why can’t I add logic to my dropdown question? Dropdown questions don’t currently support conditions. Use a multiple choice question instead — it behaves almost identically for respondents and fully supports logic.
How do I check whether a file was uploaded? File upload questions support the answered operator — a rule can branch based on whether a file was provided.
Can I use the respondent’s answer as a variable value? No — variable actions assign static values or perform calculations. What you can do is calculate on variables (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and reference variables in conditions. See Update Variables with Logic.
Can a condition reference the Thank You Page? No — conditions reference answers, variables, and hidden fields. The Thank You Page is a branching jump target, not a condition source.
